What is a High Yield Investment Program?
A High Yield Investment Program (HYIP) is, as the name suggests, an investment program that promises a very high return (ROI), much higher than usual investments can provide.
But pay attention! They do not have a good reputation, because, every day, scams are revealed concerning this kind of programs which most often work in the form of Ponzi schemes.
Ponzi scheme based websites are illegal. Consequently it is totally inadvisable to invest there, since even if they pay at the beginning, the ponzis always end up stopping paying.
However, some investors try to make money by attempting to invest in HYIPs at an early enough stage to create a return, and then by cashing out before the scheme collapses to profit at the expense of the later entrants. This is in itself a gamble as poor timing may result in a total loss of all money invested – even if some of these programs manage to last several months or even years.
Some key features of most of these programs:
- the promise of high returns (usually 0.5% to 5% per day;
- domicile in a tax haven;
- the assertion that the funds are invested in the stock markets or most often in the currency market (eg Forex).
